HONORING THE CREATIVE FLOW
I explore the line between the conscious and subconscious—between real and the surreal—between the physical and the metaphysical. My daily practice is all about tuning in, letting ideas come through and capturing them before they slip away. Whether it’s with a Micron pen, acrylics on canvas, or ink on cardboard.
Creatures, symbols and worlds just show up, asking to be seen. Sometimes they’re friendly. Sometimes they're weird. Usually, they're both. I love that they can make you laugh, wonder or even feel a little uneasy—I’m dedicated to honoring the creative flow.
THE PROCESS
My process is raw and intuitive. I sketch daily in thin, black lines until something jumps out and demands to be bigger. I’ll paint it onto canvas or wood, filling in the details and letting the colors swirl. I also rescue old, thrift shop paintings and collaborate with them, adding my own characters to create something new.
BACKGROUND
My experience has come from years of drawing, playing in bands, writing kids’ music and paying attention to every artist friend who would let me watch them work.
Over the years, I’ve painted street art pieces under the name Running Deer, created posters for many bands, including Foo Fighters, Pavement and Grandaddy. I’ve composed songs and sang for numerous broadcasters such as Sesame Street, Disney, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon’s “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!"
