From their hungry, puffy, white, black and yellow caterpillar days to their quiet, hard, shiny, light blue armored chrysalis phase, to their angelic, orange, black and white launch as fearless and fast sky travelers, the monarch is a North American, flapping icon! Not to mention their pollination skills!
But our fluttering friends are currently suffering great loss in numbers due to the spraying and decline of their beloved milkweed plant (especially in agricultural areas) where they lay their eggs and in which the caterpillars feed solely upon, loss of space in their winter habitat in Mexico due to illegal logging and changing weather conditions causing out-of-season storms, severe temperature drops and excessive rain.
The 1990's eastern monarch population is down from nearly one billion to 93 million. And regarding their Mexican, winter habitat, their numbers are down 53% from 2019, occupying only 7 acres this years down from 15 last year (It's reported that 15 acres is a minimum threshold needed to prevent the collapse of their migration and possible extinction.)
My intention with this design is to call attention to the current population pressures on this beautiful butterfly and their importance to us all.
